武蔵野文化小ホール：シューマン弦楽四重奏団演奏会

２月２４日，武蔵野文化会館小ホールに，シューマン弦楽四重奏団を聴きに行って来ました．結成が２００７年といいますから未だ駈けだしのクヮルテットです．それでも大阪国際室内楽コンクールでは２位，２０１２年オーストリアで開催されたシューベルト＆現代音楽コンクールというのでは優勝したそうです．

シューマンは，第１，第２ヴァイオリン，それにチェロがシューマン兄弟なので名付けられたそうです．ヴィオラに日本人の後藤彩子さんが加わっていました．２００９年からといいますから，結成２年目で交替があったことになります．

今夜のプログラムは，
ハイドン：　　　弦楽四重奏曲 第66番 ト長調　Op.77-1,Hob.Ⅲ-81「ロブコヴィッツ」
ヤナーチェク：弦楽四重奏曲 第１番　「クロイツェル・ソナタ」

シューベルト：弦楽四重奏曲第14番 二短調　「死と乙女」　D.810
でした．

偶然でしょうか，ハイドンの曲は，作品番号の表記が違っていますが，先日，東京クヮルテットが第１曲目に弾いた曲で，その印象が強く残っていたモノですから，出だしからガッガリしました．

クロイツェル・ソナタはこの直前のブログで，Julliard String Quartet の新メンバーによる演奏評で，クロイツェルの演奏が白眉だったとして述べられていたことが頭に残っていて，これも頂けませんでした．そこでは，

The highlight of the evening was a brooding, nuanced interpretation of Janacek’s Quartet No. 1 (“Kreutzer Sonata”), ．．． They aptly conveyed the yearning, urgency and bittersweet joviality of this richly scored work.　と書かれていたのですが，シューマンはそれにはほど遠かったと思います．

シューベルトの超有名な「死と乙女」も頂けませんでした．

この弦楽四重奏団は，いったいどこまでが常設なのだろうといぶかしく思いました．アンサンブルが決して綺麗ではないのです．チェロが目立つのは悪いことではありませんが，このチェロは高音弦と低温弦で音色が違ってしまうのです．とくに低弦部では音色が濁ってしまって，クロイツエルでも「死と乙女」でも，チェロの低弦が大きく鳴るところでは，全然頂けませんでした．
それが全体をぶちこわす他にも，第１，第２ヴァイオリンが和音になるべきところが，音色がずれていて綺麗な和音にならないのです．
ヴィオラは健闘していたと思いますが，アンサンブルを救うまではいけませんでした．

兄弟姉妹でクヮルテットをやっている老舗にハーゲン弦楽四重奏団がありますが，私が何度も聴いた範囲では，出来不出来の波が大きかったという印象があります．
このシューマンもそれに似たところがあるように思うのですが，３人兄弟が本当に喧嘩腰でアンサンブルの修正を図ることには無理があるのではないでしょうか．僅か２年でヴィオラが交替したのも，さもありなんという感じでした．

丁度，タイミングの悪い日に聴きに行ってしまったのがいけなかったのですが，酷評をしてしまいました．いつもではありませんから，ご了承下さい．

なお，この弦楽四重奏団は26日には秋田県の大仙市で，今夜と同一曲目の演奏会が予定されています．

US:メンバー交代で存続するString Quartet

先日のブログで，Emerson Quartet がチェロの交替（ it would fill the role of the departing cellist David Finckel, a member since 1979, with Paul Watkins, next season）でなお，当分，存続すると書きましたが，今度は，origonal member が1人もいなくなっても音楽学校の看板を背負って存続する例として，Juilliard String Quartet　が，看板のfirst violin を交替させて，Juilliard の Faculty Member によるQuartet として，今後も存続の姿勢を明確にし，演奏会で見事な演奏を展開したことが報じられていましたのでご紹介します．

Mr. Joseph Lin, a sensitive, passionate player with a glowing tone, is the third musician to become the quartet’s first violinist since Robert Mann left in 1997.とあり，Robert Mann が1997年に引退してから，３人目になるそうですが，この台湾からの移民の子はたいへん優秀で，これでJulliard　は安定するのではと期待されています．

Joseph Lin は,
He has performed with many symphonies, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the New Japan Philharmonic. He has also performed chamber music, including appearances at Ravinia and the Marlboro Music Festival. He was an assistant professor of violin at Cornell University from 2007 to 2011.
In 1996, he won first prize at the Concert Artists Guild International Competition and was named a Presidential Scholar. In 1999, he was the youngest musician to receive the Pro Musicis International award. In 2006, he won the London International String Quartet Competition.

と輝かしい経歴の持ち主ですから，これからのJulliard SQ は安定して発展するモノと期待されます．

この Julliard String Quartet 演奏会の音楽評は，タイトルにあるように，新生のQuartet を高く評価しており，その一環にJoseph Lin　が置かれています．

The evening, part of Juilliard’s faculty recital series, opened with a vivid performance of Stravinsky’s brief Three Pieces for String Quartet.

The program concluded with a graceful interpretation of Mozart’s Quartet in A (K. 464),．．．．．As an encore, the group offered the Contrapunctus No. 4 from Bach’s “Art of Fugue.”

Finding Janacek’s Yearning, Urgency and Bittersweet Joviality

After decades together the members of prominent string quartets invariably have to decide whether the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Some ensembles, like the Guarneri String Quartet, ultimately disband after a prestigious career. Others reincarnate themselves with new members, like the Emerson Quartet, which said last week it would fill the role of the departing cellist David Finckel, a member since 1979, with Paul Watkins, next season.

So too has the eminent Juilliard String Quartet flourished through a number of personnel changes, and to judge from its concert on Tuesday evening at Alice Tully Hall, there haven’t been any teething problems with the latest recruit, Joseph Lin, who joined the ensemble in 2011, when he became a Juilliard faculty member.

Mr. Lin, a sensitive, passionate player with a glowing tone, is the third musician to become the quartet’s first violinist since Robert Mann left in 1997.

The highlight of the evening was a brooding, nuanced interpretation of Janacek’s Quartet No. 1 (“Kreutzer Sonata”), inspired by Tolstoy’s novella of the same name and written while Janacek was infatuated with a married woman. Mr. Lin and his colleagues — Ronald Copes, second violinist; Samuel Rhodes, violist; and Joel Krosnick, cellist — aptly conveyed the yearning, urgency and bittersweet joviality of this richly scored work.

The evening, part of Juilliard’s faculty recital series, opened with a vivid performance of Stravinsky’s brief Three Pieces for String Quartet. The innovative work inspired the poet Amy Lowell to try to capture the sound and movement of the music in verse after she heard the New York premiere in 1915.

The program concluded with a graceful interpretation of Mozart’s Quartet in A (K. 464), the fifth of six quartets Mozart dedicated to Haydn, whose efforts in the genre Mozart greatly admired. As an encore, the group offered the Contrapunctus No. 4 from Bach’s “Art of Fugue.”
