Stellar soloists and beefy Russian orchestras highlight a banner season for classical music in Kansas City.

While he is a fairly frequent visitor to town, the appearance of superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma on the Harriman-Jewell Series on March 18 is bound to be a season highlight. The recital, at the Folly Theater, with British pianist and Chandos recording artist Kathryn Stott, will feature music by Schubert, Piazzolla and Shostakovich.

A number of acclaimed pianists take center stage this season, including Yefim Bronfman, who opens the Kansas City Symphony’s Classical Series with Brahms’ “Second Piano Concerto” Sept. 25-27. Chinese pianist Lang Lang’s meteoric rise since replacing Andre Watts in a concert with the Chicago Symphony 10 years ago has been nothing short of miraculous. He’ll perform Beethoven’s beloved “Appassionata Sonata” and works by Albéniz and Prokofiev on the Harriman-Jewell Series on Sept. 15.

Other top-notch pianists appear with the Symphony, including Robert Levin playing Beethoven March 5-7, Simone Dinnerstein featured in Mozart’s sensational “Piano Concerto No. 21” May 14-16 and Vladimir Feltsman performing the Tchaikovsky “First Piano Concerto” June 4-6.

The Friends of Chamber Music hosts two pianists in its Master Pianists Series debut: Armenian Nareh Arghamanyan on Oct. 2 and Stephen Prutsman on Feb. 12.

Kansas City Symphony music director Michael Stern once said pianist Marc-André Hamelin “plays like he has six fingers on each hand.” Previous area concerts and recitals have been spectacular. Hamelin will play music of Mozart, Fauré and Alkan on the Harriman-Jewell Series on Feb. 19.

In addition to Ma, other top-rank string players will appear in concerts and recitals this season. The most prestigious of the group, violinist Gil Shaham, was born in Illinois and moved to Israel, where he received his early training before returning to the U.S. to study at Juilliard with Kansas native Dorothy DeLay. For years, Shaham has been one of the most prominent violinists on the international scene. In his Jan. 22-24 concerts with the Kansas City Symphony, he will perform concertos by Barber and Prokofiev.

While only 22 years old, violinist Stefan Jackiw boasts appearances with a host of nationally and internationally renowned orchestras. This includes a performance with the Boston Pops at the ripe old age of 10. He returns on Sept. 26 for his third appearance on the Harriman-Jewell Series.

Several local musical treasures will be featured during the season. Kanako Ito, the highly talented violinist and concertmistress of the Kansas City Symphony, will perform Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto in E Minor” on a Symphony Classical Series performance Oct. 23-25.

The Friends of Chamber Music will present Behzod Abduraimov and Stanislav Ioudenitch on March 5. Abduraimov last April became the youngest first-place winner in the history of the London International Piano Competition. He studies with Ioudenitch at the International Center for Music at Park University.

Ioudenitch, of course, is well-known in his own right as a gold medalist in the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

Outstanding chamber ensembles include the Takács String Quartet, presented Jan. 9 by the Friends of Chamber Music, the edgy Kronos Quartet on April 13 at the Lied Center in Lawrence and the Brentano String Quartet with clarinetist Charles Neidich on May 1 at the Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College.

A handful of international orchestras wend their way to the region this season. The Lied Center will feature one of the most prominent of South American ensembles, the Orquestra de São Paulo, on Oct. 9. Led by American conductor Kazem Abdullah, the orchestra will play a newly commissioned percussion concerto by Brazilian composer Marlos Nobre with sensational percussionist Evelyn Glennie.

Harriman-Jewell presents two Russian orchestras in practically a blink of an eye: the Russian National Orchestra on Feb. 26 and the Moscow State Radio Symphony the following weekend on March 6. Those who relish the rich timbres characteristic of Russian ensembles should be delighted to hear them in the more intimate confines of the Folly.

The Carlsen Center will present the Philharmonia of the Nations at Yardley Hall on Feb. 13. Pianist Jon Nakamatsu, a Harmonia Mundi recording artist and gold medalist at the 1997 Van Cliburn Competition, will join the orchestra for Brahms’ “Piano Concerto No. 1.”

Opera buffs, rejoice! While the Lyric Opera of Kansas City has cut back the number of performances per production, it will roll out the red carpet for four of the most popular works in the repertory this season.

Rich with luxurious melodies, Puccini’s “Tosca” opens this Friday, followed by the uproarious Gilbert and Sullivan “H.M.S. Pinafore” on Nov. 6. Two of opera’s greatest “bad boys” appear onstage in 2010: the Duke of Mantua (remember “La donna è mobile”?) in Verdi’s classic melodrama “Rigoletto,” opening March 20, and seducer Don Giovanni in Mozart’s great opera of the same name, which opens April 24.

George Gershwin’s classic American opera “Porgy and Bess” celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2010, and the Carlsen Center will present a fully staged touring performance on Feb. 26-27.

World-class vocalists who will grace Kansas City area stages this season include Dame Emma Kirkby, a legendary soprano who is one of the jewels in the crown of the early music world. Along with lutenist Jakob Lindberg, they will perform music of Dowland, Purcell and others on Oct. 30 at the Polsky Theatre at the Carlsen Center.

Dramatic soprano Deborah Voigt, renowned for her portrayals of heroines from the operas of Wagner and Strauss, will appear on the Harriman-Jewell Series, also on Oct. 30.

The Early Music Series of the Friends of Chamber Music brings back three favorites: Anonymous 4 on Oct. 24; the Tallis Scholars on Dec. 10; and Trio Mediaeval on April 18.

The Kansas City Chorale and Grammy Award-winning conductor Charles Bruffy will greet the holiday season with a performance of the hauntingly lovely “Ceremony of Carols” by Benjamin Britten on Dec. 13 and 15. Bruffy’s other fine ensemble, the Kansas City Symphony Chorus, along with the Symphony, commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of Haydn with arguably the composer’s greatest choral work — the “Lord Nelson Mass,” Oct. 23-25.
