Cast for Met’s ‘Ring’ Goes Round and Round

Die Walküre at the Metropolitan OperaKen Howard/Metropolitan Opera James Morris as Wotan and Irene Theorin as Brünnhilde in “Die Walküre” at the Metropolitan Opera.

Updated | 12:36 p.m. The Metropolitan Opera’s mounting of Wagner’s “Ring” cycle, which has already been hit by a flurry of casting changes, is about to weather a few more. Gerhard Siegel has withdrawn from the role of Mime, and Jill Grove has withdrawn from the roles of Erda and the First Norn in the four-opera cycle. In a statement, the Met said that both performers had left due to illness. Robert Brubaker will sing the role of Mime in “Siegfried” on Saturday, as well as April 30 and May 7; Dennis Petersen will sing the role in “Das Rheingold” on April 23 and 27 and May 4. Wendy White, who was scheduled to sing Erda in “Das Rheingold” on April 23 will also sing the role on April 27 and May 4, as well as in “Siegfried.” Additionally, the Met said, Johan Botha did not sing Siegmund in “Die Walküre” last Saturday due to illness; he was replaced by Gary Lehman, who performed the role in that work for the first time in his career.

Separately, the Met announced that Luciana D’Intino has withdrawn from the role of Azucena in “Il Trovatore,” citing illness. The role will be sung by Dolora Zajick on April 21, 25, 29 and May 2, and by Mzia Nioradze on May 8.

Levine Falls Ill Before ‘Das Rheingold’

James Levine
Sudden substitutions often befall opera casts, and they sometimes occur on the conductor’s podium, too. Just before the Metropolitan Opera’s presentation of “Das Rheingold” on Thursday night, the conductor James Levine became ill and withdrew from the performance. The assistant conductor John Keenan went on in Mr. Levine’s place. Lee Abrahamian, the Met’s director of communications, said in a telephone interview that Mr. Levine had come down with “some sort of stomach bug” but was expected to return for the Saturday matinee performance of “Götterdämmerung,” which will be broadcast live online and on the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network and Sirius XM satellite radio.
